I read Tucci’s first memoir and I liked it well enough, but I did find the tone a bit pretentious at times. It sounds like this one leans even more into the food writing though so I might have to give it a go.

I mean, I could definitely see how he could come off as pretentious. But I think he just genuinely loves food and is maybe a little more than enthusiastic about it. He does talk a lot about food in What I Ate in One Year, not sure how much more than in Taste, and I really enjoyed it. But I can definitely see it from your POV.

It’s probably largely just the gap between the way he grew up with food and the way I did. My family was very much not fancy about food, lots of bags of frozen veggies and things out of cans. I didn’t even know what most spices were until I went to college 😂 so some of the commentary I was like… I don’t even know what this means. It’s been a while since I listened to it so I can’t think of examples to explain what I mean.

Oh, no, I understand exactly what you are saying! I grew up the same way. But I was always a big eater so as soon as I moved out, I started trying all sorts of other foods and cooking methods. But you are absolutely spot on, I grew up SOOOOO different from what he did so I see exactly where you are coming from.

Yeah, I’ve really expanded my relationship with food, too. It’s been great discovering new cuisines and ways to cook now that I’m a grownup. But apparently I’m still sensitive about how little I knew when I first left home lol.
