Hey all! Welcome to my sixth WWW Wednesday! It has been about two and a half months since my last WWW Wednesday – I have been dealing with some health issues and haven’t been reading as much as I would like. But I (think) I am finally out of the funk and am ready to get back to it.

What I Am Reading Now (Be prepared)
In a wild turn of events I decided about a month or two ago to pick ACOTAR up again to reread it for the new release…then fell into an anti-reading slump. I did manage to finish the first one (see below) before the slump hit but I have been crawling through the second, which is wild since it is one of my favorites (it IS my favorite of the original trilogy). But no worries, I’ll get through it.
This book has been an extremely dense and thorough introduction to Latin American literature during the colonial age. I started it after reading the one on Disapora (see below) as another entry point into Hispanic Heritage Month readings.
I’m hoping you can sense a theme here. Most of the books that I am currently reading either involve or ARE Latin American. This book was actually chosen by my Academic Reading club (our first book since I started it this month). I have already started it and love what I have read so far.
So far this is my favorite of the books I am reading but, then again, I sincerely loved her book The Hacienda, so I am little surprised. This was another book chosen by my academic book club but for our October read but I couldn’t wait to dive into it.
This collection of essays has already made me cry and I am privileged to get to read it. It is an eye-opening peek into the lives of those who sing the songs of diaspora that I mentioned below.
Yesterday I felt like picking up something a little light-hearted because most of what I’m reading deals with heavy topics. This is what I settled on, due to the new movie being released (which I will watch and review after i finish the book, of course). I have only ready the prologue but I am enjoying it so far.
This is going to be the backbone of my Latin American reads this month. It is well-researched and beautifully written and wholly a difficult read (subject matter, not competency). It gives a no-holds-barred history of how Latin America has been treated since its “discovery” (btw, Fuck Christopher Columbus). I do not expect to be pleased at all by the horror I will witness. But I need to witness it to better understand.
What I Have Finished Reading
As I mentioned above, I managed to finish ACOTAR before the woeful slump hit me. It was definitely an interesting experience rereading it so long after my last read through because I definitely enjoyed it a bit less. Or, rather, I was less enchanted by it, if that makes sense. I still enjoyed it. But not on the same level as before. I can definitely recognize its flaws now.
I started to shed my slump around the 15th, when Hispanic Heritage Month started. Mind you, I am as white as paper, but Latin American Literature is my focal point and I still wanted to participate. I wanted to approach the readings, however, like I was still at school. So I read this short intro to the concept of diaspora (a common theme in Latina/o literature). It was honestly very thorough and taught me a lot.
While I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope to read the second one soon, I do feel like it was a bit predictable. that’s okay though. I still loved it and will count it among the best reads from this year. I will admit the last-second reveal DID throw me and I am so curious to see what that is going to turn into but I must be patient…or so I tell myself.
I read this for a book club and let me tell you it honestly gave me a lot of feelings. I was very quickly catapulting toward my slump but still this book managed to suck me in and I devoured it. It actually lead to me learning a lot more (through research and discussion with my history-buff husband) about the Vietnam war than I ever learned from school, which is sad. But I enjoyed it and the discussions at my book club. So far, Kristin Hannah is 2 for 2.
What I Am Reading Next
Never fear, my friends. My currently reading list may be all shaken up from last time but this is still on my next to be read list. It may not be the very next book I read, but it’ll be coming soon. Especially since book two is now out!
As I mentioned above, I definitely am excited to read this soon, once I have gotten through more of my Latin American reads. I can’t wait to see where this takes the characters and how Perry plans to parse out everything she dropped on us in book one.
It’s another book by Isabel Cañas, so honestly that should be enough said. However, I want to further my habit of reading spooky Latin American fiction around Halloween. It’s honestly the best way to celebrate the holiday, if you ask me.
